May Mutt of the Month: Gizmo

Gizmo, an Australian cattle dog/blue heeler mix, was adopted by a dog-loving landscaper from Connecticut at the 2021 Mulligan’s Mutt Madness. Alvin was so set on getting a new furry friend at the pet adoption event that he bought a seat on his return flight for the pup he hoped to take home.

“I went expecting to adopt and had a seat reserved for him on the plane,” says Alvin, who was “sweating it” through the airport security line. But Gizmo – named after the lead character in the movie Gremlins – was a champ. “He did great and just sat in my lap most of the time.”

Alvin knew Gizmo was the one for him right away. “Gizmo was really ‘to himself’ in the play kennel, but then he came up and gave me more love than any other puppy. He licked my face and then curled up and slept in my arms.”

Gizmo is one of more than 100 dogs – including Mulligan the TurfMutt – who have been adopted at Mutt Madness over the years. The TurfMutt Foundation is looking forward to hosting the event once again with longtime partner Kentucky Humane Society (KHS) at the 2026 Equip Exposition in Louisville.
